The Esquire has gone through many transitions. It began as a plaice where Willie Nelson played a regular gig and wrote the song "Night Life" about the place. Patsy Cline used to sing there too. The hall eventually evolved into Latin dance clubs and now has gone back to its country roots.

Houston’s gay bar scene is about to kick up some dust. And it’s happening nowhere near Montrose.

Neon Boots Dancehall and Saloon is slated to open this month at 11410 Hempstead Highway, roughly 20 minutes from Houston’s hub of gay bars. And as you’ve likely determined from the name, it’s a country bar, complete with cowboy karaoke and weekly dance lessons.

“While Neon Boots is gay-owned and operated, we welcome all people regardless of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or beliefs,” reads a press release sent out this week. “When visiting Neon Boots please respect other peoples lifestyles and as always drink responsibly.”
